2008×100: Disorientation We Can Believe In

Finally: my year-end 100-song playlist/mix. Not necessarily my top 100 — Young Jeezy didn’t create my favorite track of the year, and Erykah Badu’s way higher on my list than #100 — but a 100-artist, 100-song representation of what 2008 sounded like to me (with occasional allowances made for song-to-song flow over what was big, hence the Santogold “deep cut” and a still-great Roots track that isn’t “75 Bars”). Your mileage may vary, since you might actually like Matadorian trad-indie more than doom/sludge metal or minimal techno more than scuzzy electro trash, but this is my thing and maybe there’s some stuff on it that is also your thing. That would be cool.

All Up In Your Twits

Apparently I’m pretty good at blogging consistently if it’s < 140 characters at a time. Also when it’s in the service of blabbing about weird YouTube music stuff.

(More stuff to show up here later, incl. but not limited to my 2008×100 tracklisting and I don’t know some other junk, we’ll see)

Pitchfork put out their 2008 Contributors’ Year in Culture. I am mildly embarrassed by the fact that my section is longer than everyone else’s by an absurd margin.

Though not necessarily here, per se: I’m instituting a new feature on City Pages’ music/pop culture blog Gimme Noise, dubbed The Popstream. It’s nothing complicated or revolutionary — I find a obscure/cool/weird music-related clip on YouTube, post it and review it — but I’m pretty partial to the whole format of blurbing a single song in 200ish words.

Speaking of which. I’ve got a few contributions to the Pitchfork 500 book, and hopefully nobody will find it weird that I give glowing endorsements to both Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth and Depeche Mode.

REAFFIRMATION OF EXISTENCE, PART ARGH

August 10? Really? Shit. That was a while back.

So what’s it like to come to the conclusion, even if it’s potentially inaccurate, that you don’t have a hell of a lot to say on your blog? Weirdly enough, it’s kind of easy to brush off, especially when there’s a pennant race and a social life and Netflix and working the day job and, per usual, all kinds of freelance writing to distract you. (Well, maybe not “all kinds”; since the unfortunate demise of Paper Thin Walls it’s basically All Pitchfork All the Time.) The less enthused I am about the idea of being some kind of Internet Personality, the less interested I am in the whole blog-as-public-blather-venue deal, and the more I value the circle of friends I already have and, fortunately, continue to expand via more traditional face-time venues.

However: I think that, even if this is more or less just an occasional outlet for notions that don’t fit on a messageboard or a Facebook status update, I’m going to find some way to maintain this thing and make it worth visiting for some reason or another. Announcing any kind of real actual feasible content-wise gameplan seems like it’ll inevitably result in a false start, so it’s good that I don’t actually have any real big idea notion for it yet. And maybe I don’t need one. We’ll see where this goes.

One of Stax’s finest songwriters, an icon of R&B, composer and performer of “Theme from ‘Shaft'”, the man who gave us the greatest-ever versions of “Walk on By” and “Runnin’ Out of Fools” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, star of Truck Turner, Wattstax headliner and all around great musician.

(Also word has it he was in some cartoon show or something, but who gives a shit about that.)
